描述

頭部

巨頭麝香龜得名自其不尋常的巨大頭部，其成年個體背殼長約8～13（3.1～5.1英寸），其鰓只存在於下頜上。[2]

亞種

包括其指名亞種在內，巨頭麝香龜可辨識的亞種共有2種：

• Sternotherus minor minor (Agassiz, 1857)
• Sternotherus minor peltifer (H.M. Smith & Glass, 1947)[3]
