分类

依鱼类分类学研究网站deepfin.org的分类法[1][2]，本目属于真棘鳍类鲈形亚类虾虎鱼系。

过去，虾虎鱼类被归类于鲈形目虾虎鱼亚目之中，但传统的鲈形目是个并系群且过于庞大，因此后来的分类学者依分子学的研究成果，将虾虎鱼类独立为虾虎鱼系的一目，而其内部分类也随着分子学研究而有大幅修正。
